Marianne puts word-by-word pronunciation of art song and opera aria texts on tape for her students, leaving space for repetition at home (as in a language lab).

  • Helps student to understand:
    • Consonant mutations (in German) - when to do them, when not, and the reason why
    • Single vs. doubled consonants (in Italian) the closed and open E/e
  • Gives students on-the-spot vernacular and literal translations
  • Explains flow, phrasing, and accent of the particular language
  • Helps students clarify intent, meter of the poem or text, use of alliteration, assonance or other linguistic devices
  • Gives hand-outs of pronunciation of Russian or Czech.
